Where in the world did summer go?! You blinked and June and July were gone, now kids are heading back to school… crazy! Our kids are not at the back to school age yet (ones getting close!) but I see all of the craziness of getting kids back to school. Most parents are happy for this time of year, some kids are too 😉
School mornings are hectic and getting out the door on time can be challenging. If you’re like me, crazy mornings give me anxiety and the rest of the day I’m running late which drives me nuts.
Here are some secrets to eliminate the chaos and keep your mornings stress free:
- Pack Lunches the Night Before. If your child brings a lunch to school, pack it the night before. This allows you to take your time and not be rushed trying to get a lunch together in the morning. Also, if you pack lunches set up a lunch station. This can be done by using baskets or clear bins and fill them with your child’s favorite items. For example, we have a clear storage bin in the refrigerator filled with gogurts and cheese sticks. The pantry has baskets filled with snack bars. Having these set-up will make it much easier to pack lunches. It will also help you with your grocery list because you’ll see what you need to buy.
- Backpack station. Dedicate an area where the backpack goes every time. A great place would be a mudroom inside the house or the garage or an entryway. Your child’s bedroom works well too. We have a wall coat rack that has four hooks on it in our daughter’s room, it’s at a height where she’s able to reach it. Putting backpacks in the same place eliminates stress and the “Mom, where’s my backpack?!”
- Plan Outfits. Get clothes ready the night before. If there’s something they want to wear but can’t find it, there’s more time to figure out where it’s at the night before than the morning. You can even do a load of laundry if need be. I started this concept in high school and still do it to this day, there’s nothing worse looking for something you wanted or planned to wear the next morning and can’t find it. It starts your day off on the wrong foot.
- Program Your Coffee Maker. Most if not all coffee makers have programming capabilities, use it! Get it ready the night before and when you wake up you’ll walk over to a pot just waiting for you, it’s glorious. If it’s too much to do it the night before, make it the very first thing you do in the morning so it can brew while you get other things done.
As you can see most of this list is doing it the night before. It doesn’t take all that long to get ready the night before unless you have to do laundry. You can do this all in 15 minutes or less. Give it a try!
