Measure The Space
The first step with any organizing project is measuring the space. Knowing the dimensions is critical because there is nothing that will deflate your energy when the bins don’t fit. These are the three you need:
Write them down. A personal favorite to use when gathering dimensions is post-it notes. It’s easy to transport or display a post it note when working on a project. They fit nicely in a wallet or stick well to a cabinet when planning out a project.
Search For Products
Once you know your dimensions, then it’s time to shop for some bins. Places like The Container Store, Target, and Amazon all have bin options. There are a handful of ways to organize wire shelves, to help guide you, here are a few things to consider:
- What is my budget? Knowing how much you want to spend will eliminate the options available making it easier to make decisions.
- How do you want the space to look? The appearance of how its organized matters, you’ll more likely to keep it that way when you love what you are looking at.
- To conceal or not conceal? This all comes down to the space you are organizing and your preference. For example, clear bins allow you to see everything that’s in there, eliminating guesswork. On the flip side, when it’s concealed you don’t have to see what’s in there. A great example of this is hiding seasonal clothing or a donate bin.
- Is it possible to stack bins? Stacking creates more space, allowing one to maximize every inch.
When searching for products, make sure the bins have a FLAT bottom, this will ensure they sit sturdy on the shelves. Symmetry matters when selecting bins, our brains love it, choose bins that match.
