What to wear? A question we ask ourselves every single day. It’s a question for many that brings frustration and stress. Not having a good closet organizer or holding onto clothes that no longer fit. Having an organized closet has many benefits that we’ll discuss. The main thing it does is start your day off on the right foot.
Closets come in many different shapes and sizes, and choosing a closet organizer for your space can be challenging. There’s a plethora of products to choose from and can be overwhelming. We’re going to cover the different closet organizer systems we’ve used for homes here in Charlotte NC.
Before we jump in on the different closet organizer systems available, let’s discuss the WHY behind having an organized closet matters.

IMPROVES SELF ESTEEM
This is arguably the most important point with an organized closet. You should feel GREAT about what you wear. We’ve all had those clothes that “I’m hanging onto because one day I’m going to fit into them” When you choose to let those pieces go, you’re giving yourself permission of who you are meant to be.
Those clothes that have sat in the closet for years untouched are holding you back. You deserve to feel good about yourself.
Women in general have self-esteem issues and it’s part of my mission to change that narrative by keeping clothes that serve us and make us feel good about ourselves. It’s time to change the mindset from “Ugh I have nothing to wear” to “I love everything in my closet.”
When you walk into your closet, you should feel like you walked into a department store.
SAVES TIME
I have yet to meet someone who enjoys being late. There’s nothing worse than searching for a shirt you KNOW was clean and can’t find it. Better yet, searching for your kids’ soccer jersey Saturday morning, the joys of parenting 😉
SAVES MONEY
The amount of closets that I’ve scoured through, I’ve seen it repeatedly “Oh I forgot I had that” or my personal favorite “Oh I forgot I bought that” as it still has its tags on. When you know what you have, you don’t need to buy anything else.
Closet Organizer Options
THE CONTAINER STORE
One of my favorite custom product lines is Elfa from The Container Store. There are endless options with this product. This product line has been around for over 30 years.
What I love about this product line is that it’s a good fit between builder-grade wire shelves and a custom cabinet maker.
It also works well for older homes as they tend to have unique spaces and shelves.
Master Closet Organizer #1
This closet had two wood planks that acted as the shelf. Below that was the metal bar and a drawer unit. We needed to make this a functional closet that was aesthetically appealing.
Enter the closet organizer system Elfa. We used Elfa here to add more shelves, move the hanging off to the sides, and incorporate drawers.
The solid shelving has a clean look and allows items to sit flat. This client had beautiful handbags and we wanted to have them on display. The drawers were used for workout gear and jewelry.
Master Closet Organizer #2
This closet organizer already had the Elfa system in there. The main issue was this client kept running into the corner of the bins which resulted in bruises on her leg. If you’ve ever run into any type of furniture, you know the bruising and choice of words that come along with it.
The beauty of this closet organizer is the adjustable components. There were already shelves in other places in the closet. We swapped out the drawers with shelves for a few reasons.
One, the depth of the shelves was shorter than the bins. This reduced the distance between the closet organizer and the door. Two, putting shelves here created a shoe zone, making them easier to see and assess.
I had organized their closet in a different home so they already had these stackable shoe bins. We added them to maximize space between the shelves.
The last thing we added to this space is dress pants. We made use of the bottom space by hanging dress pants here.
Master Closet Organizer #3
The last space that I want to show you with the Elfa closet organizing system is my sister’s closet. While this space wasn’t in Charlotte, we were able to create a design virtually.
My sister’s previous closet had Elfa and we were able to use most of the components she had already had. We supplemented the remaining pieces and had them shipped to her.
This closet had a unique design. The wall was angled and the closet went through both doors.
To maximize space here, shelves were added along with long and short hangings.
She previously had the gray and clear storage bins, we made use of them by stacking them where possible.
Elfa was the only closet organizer that allowed us to achieve what we wanted with this closet. It is a great option for a custom closet without spending $10k on a closet.
IKEA
The next closet organizer option that we have used in homes here in Charlotte NC is Boaxel from IKEA. This product line is a more affordable option than The Container Store.
IKEA Closet Organizer Boaxel – Master Closet
This closet had the standard wire shelves that nobody likes and she wanted them gone.
We wanted to create a system that was easy to maintain and allowed them to see everything.
Solid shelves are a game changer, they create a clean look and allow items to sit flat on the shelf.
We added storage drawers at the bottom for items that get folded such as scrubs, sweatshirts, shorts, and t-shirts.
Stackable shoe bins were added to maximize the space on the shelf and make them easily accessible. We moved the shoes that weren’t worn as much to the top shelf yet visible so she knew what she had.
IKEA Closet Organizer – Boys Room
The Boaxel closet organizer was perfect for this little boys’ room. This sweet boy has mobility challenges so they wanted him to be able to reach his clothes on his own.
Adding these drawers and pants hangers gave him immediate access. He’s able to pull out the drawers and get what he needs and can see everything right in front of him.
IKEA Closet Organizer – Playroom
An empty closet is Christmas morning for an organizer. When I saw this closet, I immediately knew we needed to add shelves.
Adding shelves allowed everything to be easily accessible. Plus, you could see everything in front of you. We were still able to utilize the toy chest and other large storage bins by putting them add the bottom.
IKEA is a great closet organizer option when you’re looking for something to upgrade your closet without spending a lot.
CURRENT CLOSET SYSTEM
Not every closet needs a new closet organizer system. Some just need some products to enhance what’s there.
The middle of this closet wasn’t being fully used. The shoes on the floor were hard to reach and the goal was to get everything off the floor.
We were able to accomplish the goal of everything off the floor by adding stackable shoe bins. Putting the shoes in the middle unit made everything accessible and visible.
Here is another example of a closet with wasted space. The necklaces were hanging on by a thread with these hangers. It’s like hiking the Grand Canyon, you don’t want to get too close to the ledge or you’ll fall over, these necklaces were on the verge of falling over the ledge.
Stackable storage bins made great use of this space. The sweaters fit perfectly here. On top of the sweater bins were the headbands. These headband stands keep all the headbands in one location and give you a great visual of what you have.
Prefabricated closets that come with shelves are great. It’s figuring out how to organize them that can be tricky.
Another way to organize shelves is by using shelf dividers. These shelf dividers prevent things from falling over and keep the shelves in order.
