WHY CLOSET ORGANIZATION IS IMPORTANT

When you wear something you love and feel good in, you are putting your best foot forward.  You feel good about yourself which affects your mood.  When you’re in a good mood, you think clearly and are more productive.

This even applies to workout clothes.  If you don’t like your workout clothes, you’re not going to put in your best effort.  Every time I wear a new piece of workout gear whether it’s shoes, shorts, or a shirt I always have a great workout.

HOW TO ORGANIZE YOUR CLOSET:

Step 1: Empty out your closet and drawers completely

The first step in figuring out how to organize your closet is to take every single piece of clothing out of the closet and off the hanger.

Also, take out every piece of clothing that you keep in your drawers.

Put it all in one big pile.  Using your bed is a good place.

Taking everything out allows you to start with a clean slate.

Step 2: Sort items by category

Creating categories by the type of item you are sorting (do not purge in this step).  You need to see everything you have, it’ll help you make better decisions.

Blouses

Sweaters

Cardigans

Dresses

Pants

Jeans

Skirts

T-Shirts

Workout

Shorts

Purses

Jewelry

Undergarments

Shoes

Step 3: Purge piles

Go through each and every pile and decide what is staying and what is going.

Have a donate bin and trash bin on hand to make the process easier.

Physically touching every piece of clothing forces you to make a connection with it.  Stay in tune with your emotions during this process and listen to them.

I bet you have a favorite outfit and only wear it on certain occasions because you love how it makes you feel.  That’s the exact feeling you should be striving for in this process.

It can be easy to cheat during this process because you could really say you love every item of clothing.  It’s time to get really honest with yourself here.

Here are some tips to help you decide what to keep and what to toss:

  • Do you feel your best self when you wear it?  If you don’t, get rid of it.
  • When was the last time you wore it?  If it’s been a year or more, get rid of it.
  • Does it fit?  If not, get rid of it.
  • Are there any holes? If so, get rid of it.
  • Are any buttons missing? If so, get rid of it.

If you haven’t fixed it now, it’s not getting fixed. For real. Unless your sewing machine is in the room with you, it’s not happening.

Step 4: Immediately take the donate pile out of your room

Put it in the trunk of your car or your garage, somewhere where you won’t be tempted to dig back into the bag.

If you are feeling really ambitious, drive it straight to Goodwill or start selling items online.  Thred Up, Facebook Groups, and eBay are great places to sell used clothing.

Having a bin in your room when you start will help you in this process.

Step 5: Organizing your closet

Now the fun begins, getting your closet back in order.

Your blouses, dresses, skirts, and cardigans can all be hung up on hangers.

Get rid of any mismatching hangers and upgrade to felt hangers.  Having consistent hangers will give you a more organized look and feel.

Felt hangers are sleek and modern, most items also don’t fall off of them because of the material on the hanger.

Arranging your closet

How it is all arranged will depend on the type of closet you have.  If you have a two-tier rack system, a top row, and a bottom row, you’ll arrange your clothes differently than you would if you only had one row.

If you have two rows the top rack should include all of your shirts, blouses, cardigans, etc.  The bottom row should include your pants, skirts, jeans, etc.

If you have one row, start with your cardigans and blouses and move to your dresses, skirts, and pants.

If you have shelves in your closet, use them to store seasonal items such as

  • Sweaters
  • Sweatshirts
  • Swimsuits
  • Shoes

Your t-shirts, sweaters, workout gear, shorts, and jeans can all be folded and put in drawers or on the shelf.  When folding these types of clothing, you want to fold each item so they can be stored vertically in the drawers.

Once you know where you want your clothes to go, it’s time to color code.

Color coding your clothes does more than just keep your closet beautifully organized, it also helps you find what you need when you need it.  It makes it quick and easy.

Plus color coding is free, there isn’t anything you need to buy to make this happen.  It’s a habit that can easily be adapted.  When you take out your white shirt, put it back together with the rest of the white shirts.

When it comes time to find your favorite shirt or dress, you’re going to find it immediately and be instantly gratified.

Shoes

Organizing shoes can be a bit tricky too because they come in different shapes and sizes.  The best way to keep them organized will depend on the space in your closet.

Keep them organized by type (sandals, boots, etc.) and then color.

If you store your shoes in your closet and don’t have a shelf for them, get a shoe organizer.  Use sturdy and stable organizers (not plastic or cloth ones).

HOW LONG WILL THIS TAKE

Getting motivated to get organized can be hard especially when you are overwhelmed.  How long it will take to organize your closet really depends on how many clothes you have.

To give you a rough estimate, it takes us anywhere from 6-12 hours to organize a closet and that’s with 2-3 organizers.  Allow for plenty of time to get your closet organized.  Schedule in your calendar and ask a friend to help you if you know it’s going to be hard.

Make sure to have your favorite tunes handy to keep you going when you hit a rut.

FINAL THOUGHTS

Having an organized closet will help you find your favorite shirt or dress quickly.  Having hangers that match and a color-coded system will help keep your closet beautifully organized.

Take the time to purge out your closet and only keep what you love and makes you feel good.
