1. IKEA Toy Organizer – Trofast
The most common and popular system is the Trofast. There are a variety of sizes and combinations available, making it an extremely versatile and flexible option. This system is easy for kids to use. They can take the bin out with them to play or use it as a drawer and grab what is needed.
Toys are often big and bulky, making them hard to organize. The large bins make it easy to organize the larger toys such as cars and trucks. The smaller ones work well for the smaller toys like Barbies.
When organizing toys, sort the toys and decide categories first. Then decide the number of bins that will be needed and work backwards from there.
For this play space, the larger bins were used for dress-up and cars/trucks. As someone who has organized many play spaces, dresses work best in a bin. The cute display of them hanging are lovely to look at but no kid wants to hang them back up on a hanger.
The trofast system has space in between the bins which allows you to toss toys in them or only have to pull the drawer out slightly.
2. IKEA Toy Organizer – Kallax
The next most popular option from IKEA for toy storage organizers is the Kallax, their version of a cube organizer.
Cube organizers are a great option for playrooms because they utilize vertical space. The cube spaces make it easy to organize a variety of categories and we all know the number of categories for toys ;). It’s also a nice furniture piece for a playroom that can grow with the kids as they age into new toys.
The Kallax system is different from other cube organizers because you can make different customizations. Door fronts, paper dividers, and more can be added.
This project already had this storage cube, we just enhanced it by adding clear bins and labels. You can use solid or clear bins, it comes down to your preference and/or your kids’ preference. Some like to see the toys knowing what they have whereas others that would rather conceal it and not have to see it all.
3. IKEA Toy Organizer – Boaxel
The next toy storage option is Boaxel. This is a built-in system that can be used for a closet or an open wall. Solid shelves are a great option for any space, they give you a cleaner look and the ability to use stackable bins. They utilize space that is not being optimized and get everything off the floor.
Boaxel has a design tool where you can mix and match shelves and drawers. If this is an option, know your dimensions before playing around with the tool.
For this project, we simply added shelves. The space was an empty closet and knew adding these shelves would give them more storage. We used the color bins they previously had from a different toy system and added these clear bins for all the small toys.
4. IKEA Toy Organizer – Besta
The last IKEA toy storage organizer option is Besta. This option is another custom build and is classified as a ‘TV Stand’. It’s important to think outside the box sometimes because you never know what might work for your space.
We used this option in this playroom makeover, it was a labor of love. It fit perfectly in the space that was available to use.
Out of all of the IKEA toy storage options, this one has the most customization available. From door fronts to knobs to feet, there is a plethora of options to choose from.
For this project, the door fronts were added to conceal the toys and not have to see all of them. We used three of the tall units and two of the smaller units and stacked them on top of one another. We did not want the storage unit to cover the window. This was the best configuration for what we were trying to accomplish.
Here is how the unit looked before the doors were added. We used the storage bins they already had and created zones for each category.
ASSEMBLY
Putting together IKEA furniture can be enough to make you lose your mind. Mental preparation is a must for any assembly. Based on installing all four of these units at one point or another. This is how I would rank them from easiest to hardest:
- Kallax
- Trofast
- Besta
- Boaxel
The Kallax unit goes together quickly while the Boaxel system is going to take longer because of the installation. The hardware (anchors and screws) do NOT come with the Boaxel components. It’s not even an option to purchase them, you have to get anchors and screws from Lowe’s or Home Depot.
PRICE
IKEA is an affordable option for any home. As someone who is budget-conscious, IKEA is a great solution for toy storage. Kids are hard on furniture and toys. You are less likely to be uptight when it comes to any type of damage to the unit. This is how I would rank them from an affordability standpoint:
- Trofast
- Kallax
- Besta
- Boaxel
FINAL THOUGHTS
Having a toy system in place will save you your sanity. IKEA is a great option for toy storage. It’s not a place I want to be at on a Saturday or any other day for that matter, haha. Using their online tool and delivery has been a game changer for many projects.
Frustration over toys and where they should go isn’t something you should have to stress over. When a good system is in place, you’re calm, kids are happy and exploring their creativity, the ultimate goal.
