THE IMPORTANCE OF A FUNCTIONAL ENTRYWAY

A functional entryway sets the stage for the rest of your home. It’s the first area you and your guests see upon entering, and it should reflect your style and personality while providing practical storage solutions.

An organized coat closet not only eliminates clutter but also saves you time and frustration. No more running late because you can’t find your keys or spending precious minutes searching for a missing glove.

When your entryway is functional, it creates a smooth transition from the outside world to your home.

Your closet entryway is the first thing you see when you enter your home, so why not make it both functional and stylish?  From adding storage solutions to incorporating decorative elements, there are many ways to transform your closet entryway into a space you’ll love.

ASSESSING YOUR COAT CLOSET SPACE

Before diving into the transformation process, it’s essential to assess your coat closet space. Take a close look at the size, layout, and current state of your closet. Consider how much outerwear you need to store, including coats, jackets, hats, scarves, and gloves. Assess the available shelving, hooks, and racks, and determine if any repairs or upgrades are necessary.

If you have a small coat closet, don’t worry. There are still plenty of ways to maximize the space and create an organized and functional entryway. Consider utilizing vertical space with stackable storage bins or installing additional hooks on the inside of the door. For larger closets, take advantage of the extra room by incorporating additional shelving or dedicated storage solutions for shoes and accessories.

Remember, the key is to create a space that works for your specific needs. Assessing your coat closet space allows you to plan and make informed decisions about the best storage solutions and design elements for your entryway.

DECLUTTERING AND ORGANIZING YOUR COAT CLOSET

Before you can transform your coat closet into a stylish and functional space, it’s crucial to declutter and organize your belongings. Start by emptying your coat closet and sorting through each item. Donate or discard any coats, jackets, or accessories that you no longer wear or need. This step is essential to ensure that you only keep items that serve a purpose and align with your style.

Once you’ve decluttered your belongings, it’s time to organize them in a way that maximizes space and accessibility.

  • Consider using slim hangers for coats and jackets to create more room on the hanging rod.
  • Use baskets or bins for hats, scarves, and gloves, and label them for easy identification.
  • Utilize shelf dividers or storage boxes to keep items neatly separated and organized.

To make the most of your space, consider utilizing vertical space with hooks or wall-mounted racks for additional storage. This allows you to hang items such as umbrellas, bags, or even pet leashes.

Don’t forget to allocate space for shoes, whether it’s with a shoe rack or dedicated cubbies.

By decluttering and organizing your coat closet, you’ll create a streamlined and efficient space that makes it easy to find and access your belongings.

CHOOSE THE RIGHT STORAGE SOLUTIONS

When it comes to maximizing your closet entryway, choosing the right storage solutions is key. This entryway had a door organizer that worked to hang items.  The challenge was it wasn’t very accessible.

The top shelf didn’t have any storage bins and items were just tossed there.  Below the jackets was space that became a dumping ground for anything they wanted to toss out of sight.

We needed to add storage solutions that optimized space and made it functional.

Matching hangers make a BIG difference in any closet.  When you have matching hangers, it provides cohesiveness and is aesthetically appealing.  Adding these hangers would give this space also style.  Hangers that have the color black at the hook are my go-to because they are sharp and add a level of sophistication.

MAKE USE OF VERTICAL SPACE

When it comes to maximizing your closet entryway, don’t forget to make use of vertical space.

Vertical space also includes the door.  We used the Elfa door organizer because of the customization and flexibility.  If you’ve never heard of Elfa, check out this post to see how it can transform any space in your home.

To optimize space for this closet entryway door we used utility boards with hooks.  The width of the utility board maximized door space, giving items room to breathe like the hats.  Separating the hooks lets each hat hang with enough space.  This made them accessible without having to move one hat to get to another one.

The last thing we did with this door organizer was add a large bin for the dog walking gear. For these types of items, a bin was more practical as it’s easier to toss everything into a bin vs. hanging them.  Placing it at the bottom also made it more accessible.

By utilizing vertical space, you can create more storage without taking up valuable floor space. Plus, it adds an interesting design element to your closet entryway.

To make the most of this space for shoes, we added this shoe organizer.  This type of organizer keeps shoes neat.  It prevents shoes from being piled onto one another because there are dedicated compartments for each shoe.

The last thing that was added to make the most use of the closet entryway space was these clear stackable bins. Adding these to the top shelf created more space without having to install another shelf, saving time and money. Items stored in these bins were outdoor kids’ activities, crafts, games, and seasonal.

You can also add hooks or pegs on the walls to hang hats, scarves, and other accessories.

FINAL THOUGHTS

Once you have maximized your closet entryway for storage and style, it’s important to keep it organized and maintained. Labels were added to the top clear bins to easily identify the categories and make them accessible and easy to store items we needed.

Make sure to regularly go through your items and donate or sell anything you no longer need or use.

Use storage bins or baskets to keep smaller items organized and easily accessible. And don’t forget to regularly dust and clean the shelves and surfaces to keep your closet entryway looking its best.

With a little effort, you can create a functional and stylish space that welcomes you every time you enter your home.
