BENEFITS OF AN ORGANIZED MEDICINE CABINET

Maintaining an organized medicine cabinet is important for several reasons.

Firstly, it gives you quick and easy access to medications. Proper organization reduces the chance of overlooking important medications.

Additionally, a well-organized medicine cabinet shows you what you already have, preventing unnecessary purchases and waste.

Ultimately, the organization in this space contributes to a streamlined healthcare routine, making life easier.

Before Medicine Cabinet

We’re going to take a look at a medicine cabinet project we completed.

Majority of the medications had spilled over into the kitchen cabinets, prompting us to relocate the medicine storage next to the cabinet space in the laundry room.

There was no organized system for the medications. During the consultation, the idea of rearranging things, particularly for medicine bottles that were challenging to access, was the number one priority.

AFTER MEDICINE CABINET

This is the first after of this space.  Turntables were added to make getting bottles more accessible.

Individually items such as bandaids went in a divided turntable for the different sizes available making them easier to access.  Larger clear bins stored bigger category items such as cold & flu, etc.

MEDICINE CABINET REFRESH

The initial system worked well for a while until it didn’t.  Something I overlooked was our client’s height vs. mine (5’10” to be exact).  We revisited this space and she said it was working out well but she needed a step stool every time to reach the items on the second shelf.

The process was cumbersome. Retrieving a bin from the second row required the step stool, but having to get the step stool again when the item needed to be put back is where the system failed.

The main issue was the inconvenience of the step stool rather than the medicine cabinet system itself.

Fortunately, the adjustable shelves provided flexibility, and the introduction of stackable bins became a key strategy to optimize the first shelf and eliminate the use of a step stool.

AFTER MEDICINE CABINET

The addition of the stackable bins optimized space on the first shelf and made everything visible and accessible.  Smaller bins were used in-between the two stackable bins to maximize space for the smaller items.

MEDICINE CABINET ORGANIZERS – SELECTION PROCESS

1. Functionality with these bins needed to stack. There needed to be enough room on the bottom to get what was needed without moving the bin. Basically, could a hand move through that bin with ease?

2. Maximizing space a few bins that I looked at either didn’t have the depth or the width and we for sure needed both here since almost everything was moving to this row.

Initially, the plan for the middle bins involved placing them inside larger bins to achieve a categorized organization. However, as the process began, it became evident that this approach was impractical, as the bins obstructed the opening. Reaching into a bin meant overcoming an additional barrier, blocking access to other items.

After removing the middle bins from the larger ones, the ease of rearranging items became apparent. Wanting to make the most of these bins and recognizing available space, they were stacked in the center.

This gave the cabinet more balance.

ORGANIZING THE NEW SYSTEM

Once the system was in place, it was time to get everything organized.  The previous turntables had a few categories combined into them so I tried to keep everything the same.

The cold and allergy bin was frequently used and needed to be changed.  This bin moved down to the first row because of the frequent use.

The remaining two bins on the third row moved to the second row as we decided nothing needed to be on the third row.  Yes, it’s okay to have an empty shelf 🙂

This is the breakdown of the categories:

  • Cold & Allergy
  • Pain & Fever
  • Medicine
  • Melatonin

The medicine bin is empty, we left it like that for overflow.

For the small bins in the middle, creams, nail clippers, and medicine dispensers were all stored here.

The categories less frequently used were designated to the second row.  The pharmacy bin consists of one or two items that did not fit into any of the categories on the first row.

LABELING

Labels are crucial to making sure things go back to the right places. When labeling the medicine cabinet, keeping the categories broad will make it easier to manage.

The labels underwent a slight change and the introduction of space between the letters making it easier to read.  The items in the bins are already busy meaning there are a lot of different fonts and colors, leaving the box off the label reduced the noise.

MEDICINE CABINET ORGANIZERS

These stackable storage bins are another great solution for the cabinet.  They are ergonomically friendly and make it easy to access items.

Another medicine cabinet organizer solution is to use an expandable shelf for bottles.  This allows you to see everything in front of you making them not only visible but also accessible.

Turntables work well in medicine cabinets because many bottles are round.  Round items together optimize space.  medicine cabinet organization
