THE IMPORTANCE OF CRAFT ROOM ORGANIZATION

Craft room organization is more than just having a clean space. It is the key to unlocking your creative potential. When your craft supplies are organized and accessible, you can spend less time searching for what you need and more time creating.

An organized craft room not only saves you time but also reduces stress and frustration.

Imagine walking into your craft room and finding everything in its rightful place. Your scissors, paints, and brushes are neatly arranged, and your fabrics and papers are neatly stacked.

The feeling of calm and inspiration that comes from a well-organized space is unbeatable. With everything in order, you can focus on your projects and let your creativity flow.

BENEFITS OF A WELL-ORGANIZED CRAFT ROOM

A well-organized craft room offers numerous benefits that go beyond just finding your supplies easily. It allows you to:

Maximize your creativity: When you don’t have to waste time searching for supplies, you can spend more time on your craft projects. This extra time allows you to explore new techniques, experiment with different materials, and create to your heart’s content.

Boost your productivity: An organized craft room helps you work more efficiently. You can quickly find the tools and materials you need, eliminating unnecessary interruptions and distractions. With a clear workspace, you can focus on your projects and complete them in less time.

Reduce stress and overwhelm: Clutter and disorganization can be overwhelming. When your craft room is a mess, it can be difficult to concentrate and enjoy your creative process. By decluttering and organizing your space, you create an environment that promotes calm and relaxation, making your crafting experience more enjoyable.

Save money: How many times have you purchased duplicate supplies because you couldn’t find them in your cluttered craft room? With a well-organized space, you can easily see what you have and avoid unnecessary purchases. This can save you money in the long run and allow you to invest in higher-quality materials or tools.

COMMON CHALLENGES IN CRAFT ROOM ORGANIZATION

Craft room organization is not without its challenges. Here are some common obstacles you may face and how to overcome them:

Lack of storage space: Many crafters struggle with limited storage space. Finding creative solutions to maximize your storage can help. Utilize vertical space with wall-mounted shelves or pegboards. Use clear plastic bins or stackable containers to make the most of your space. Don’t forget to utilize the back of doors or the space under tables or desks.

Too many supplies: Crafters often accumulate a large collection of supplies over time. It’s important to regularly assess your inventory and declutter items you no longer use or need. Consider donating or selling excess supplies to free up space and make room for new materials.

Lack of organization systems: Without a clear organization system, it’s easy for your craft room to become chaotic. Invest in storage solutions that allow you to categorize and label your supplies. Use drawer dividers or small baskets to keep similar items together. Create a designated space for each type of material or tool to ensure everything has a place.

HOW TO ORGANIZE YOUR CRAFT

Step 1: Empty The Space

When starting any organizing project, the area needs to be cleared out entirely.  Why?  For one it clears the clutter so you can start with a fresh, clean space.

Clearing the area makes it easier to purge and sort everything before putting it all back together.

You will need to find space to put items you are emptying into the room.  So if you don’t have room for everything you need to clear out of the room, you’ll need to find space for it all first.

Once the space is clear, clean it.  It’s one of the rare times when this space will be fully cleared out.

Step 2: Sort & Purge

The next step is to create categories for all the items.   This step allows you to see everything you have making it easier to decide what to keep and what to toss.  Use Post-it notes or paper to create categories so it’s easier to sort.

Some common categories include:

  • Books
  • Fabric
  • Burlap
  • Ribbon
  • Crafts
  • Party
  • Paint
  • Brushes
  • Markers
  • Misc.

After everything has been sorted, it’s time to purge.  Toss anything that is broken or dried out (yes, go through each marker and test it).

If there are duplicates, determine the appropriate amount needed.  This is the rare exception where duplicates are okay to have because craft supplies can dwindle quickly especially if you have kids.

Step 3: Organize

Once the space has been cleared, purged, and sorted, the fun part comes into play, organizing!  Before running to the store to buy organizing supplies, shop your home first.  Gather any bins or containers to see what might fit.  When figuring out what kinds of bins to use, there are a few things to consider:

  1. Do you love the look and style of it?  This is extremely important because you will be looking at it often, potentially daily.
  2. Do the bins match or style well together?  Mismatched bins provide clutter.  You can use different color bins of the same type of brand because the shape is the same. For example, The Container Store has plastic bins with handles that come in a variety of colors.  You could have one of each color if you didn’t want the colors to match because the shape and style are the same.
  3. Does the space need some textiles?  For example, there are basketweave plastic bins and smooth plastic bins.  Using a combination of both gives the room some style and attractiveness, making it more enticing for you to keep it that way.

CRAFT ROOM ORGANIZATION TIPS

  • Use of space–  Be sure to space out bins accordingly.  Having them too close together makes a space look cluttered.
  • Support items–  If you have objects or items that don’t fit into a bin or container but want them to be displayed, use them as a support item.
  • Add color when necessary–  Attractiveness is important when it comes to organizing because it’s what will help you stay organized.  Add colored bins that you love to bring some life to the space.

Step 4: Label

Labels are the key to organizing success, they keep things going back to the right places.  When labeling keep the labels to a minimum (one word, two words max) this eliminates confusion.

ESSENTIAL CRAFT ROOM ORGANIZATION TOOLS & SUPPLIES

To achieve optimal organization in your craft room, you’ll need a few essential tools and supplies:

Storage containers: Invest in a variety of storage containers to suit your needs. Clear plastic bins, fabric baskets, or glass jars are all great options. Choose containers that are stackable and easy to access.

Label Maker: Labels are a must-have for an organized craft room. Use them to identify the contents of each container or shelf. Invest in a label maker or use adhesive labels and markers to create your own.

Drawer organizers: Drawer organizers are perfect for keeping small items like markers, buttons, beads, or thread organized. They help prevent items from getting mixed up and make it easier to find what you need.

Cube Organizers: Cube organizers are essential for maximizing vertical space in your craft room. Look for sturdy shelves that can hold the weight of your supplies.

Pegboards: Pegboards are versatile storage solutions that can hold a variety of tools and supplies. Hang hooks, baskets, or shelves on the pegboard to keep your frequently used items within reach.

Tiered Cart: A craft cart offers versatile mobility, allowing you to bring your supplies directly to your workspace.
