THE IMPORTANCE OF AN ORGANIZED LINEN CLOSET

An organized linen closet might seem like a small aspect of a household, but its importance should not be underestimated. Here are several reasons why maintaining an organized linen closet is valuable:

Efficient Use of Space: An organized linen closet allows you to maximize the available space. Neatly folded and stacked linens take up less room, leaving space for other household items.

Easy Access: When your linen closet is organized, finding what you need becomes a hassle-free task. You won’t have to dig through piles of linens to find a specific sheet or towel.

Time-Saving: An organized linen closet saves you time. You can quickly grab the linens you need without wasting time searching, making bed changes, or preparing for guests more efficiently.

Guest Preparedness: Linen closets often house items for guests such as extra bedding, towels, and toiletries. An organized closet ensures you’re always ready to accommodate visitors with clean and neatly arranged linens.

Reduced Stress:  Clutter and disorganization can contribute to stress and anxiety. Having an organized space, even a small one like a linen closet, can contribute to a more relaxed and peaceful environment.

HOW TO ORGANIZE YOUR LINEN CLOSET

1. Empty Out The Closet Completely

The first step when organizing any project.  Take everything out of there and start with a clean slate.

It will help give you a better visual when you are starting to put it all back together.  It will look like a tornado has ripped through your place when you first start.

Keep the end in mind when going through the organizing process.  We are creating an organized space that will make you happy.

2. Sort By Category

Once you have it empty start sorting it into categories.  When sorting make sure you have plenty of space so you can get a good visual of what you have.  Using a large bedroom or den will help.

Each person’s spaces vary but here are some suggested categories:

  • Sheets
  • Towels
  • Products
  • Blankets
  • Bath Tissue
  • Cleaning Products
  • Pillows
  • Hair Styling Tools

3. Purge Each Category

Go through each category and purge it.  If you are going through your towels, get rid of any that have holes or are ratty.  Make it your goal to be consistently among the categories.  If you have a lot of mismatched towels, it might be time to get some new ones.

When you are sorting through your products, get rid of any samples you have.  Chances are you’ve had some for quite some time and are keeping them “just in case”.  If you are going through your bedding, keep one extra set of sheets for each bedroom and a set for a blowup mattress if you have one, get rid of the rest of them.

4. Decide On Your Organizing Style For That Space

There are a plethora of bins and baskets out there that can help you keep your space organized.

You want to enjoy what you are looking at when you open up that closet.

  • Do you prefer light or dark bins?
  • Do you want to see what’s inside of the bins?  If so, wire baskets might be the best option for you.

Whatever bins you choose, make sure you use the same ones for the entire closet or at least the same ones on the same shelf. Consistency and uniformity are what make an organized space look great.

5. Measure Your Space

When organizing the linen closet, bins tend to be larger than anywhere in the house because the items stored in them are bulkier.

Make sure to measure your space, length, depth, and height.  The last thing you want to do is purchase bins and not be able to close the door because they don’t fit.

6. Store The Frequently Used Items Where They Are Easy To Access

Start with the items you use the most and then work from there.  Start in the middle of the closet and move up or down as necessary.

Towels are likely to be the ones used the most and a good place to start.  Keep in mind you don’t want to be reaching high or low for something used frequently.

Extra bedding such as sheets and pillows can be stored higher.

Determine your preferred folding method.

  • Do you want to fold your towels where they are square and lay flat?
  • Do you want to roll them and stack them?  Pick a method and stick to it.

7. Label

Once you have the space assembled, label the bins.  Labeling is one of the most important steps when organizing.  It allows you to easily identify what you need.  You save yourself time by having bins labeled.

The label tape color should be opposite of the bin.  For example, if you have a white bin, use black for the label.  If you use a dark bin, use a white label.

8. Maintain

Maintaining an organized linen closet is essential to ensure the space remains functional, clutter-free, and ready to meet your needs. Here are some tips to help you maintain the organization of your linen closet over time:

  • Regular Check-ins: Schedule regular intervals to assess the state of your linen closet. This could be monthly or seasonal. Use this time to tidy up, declutter, and make necessary adjustments.
  • One-In-One-Out Rule: For every new item you add to the linen closet, remove an old or unused item. This prevents the closet from becoming overcrowded with unnecessary items.
  • Frequent Folding and Arranging:  Take a few moments whenever you put away freshly laundered linens to fold and arrange them neatly. This small habit can prevent piles from becoming disorganized over time.
  • Stick to Categories:  Maintain the organization system you’ve established. Keep similar items together and avoid mixing unrelated items.

HOW LONG WILL THIS TAKE

It will all depend on the amount of stuff you have in there.  Always give yourself more time than you think it will take.  If you think it will take an hour, plan for an hour and a half.  Set the time on your phone to help keep you on track and turn on your favorite tunes.

FAQ LINEN CLOSET ORGANIZATION

Q: How often should I declutter and organize my linen closet?

A: It’s recommended to declutter and organize your linen closet at least once a year. However, you may choose to do it more frequently if you accumulate linens frequently or find that your storage space becomes cluttered quickly.

Q: What should I do with linens that are in good condition but no longer needed?

A: Consider donating them to a local shelter or charity organization. Many places accept linens in good condition and can put them to good use.

Q: How can I prevent my linens from becoming wrinkled in the closet?

A: Make sure to fold or roll your linens neatly before storing them. Avoid overcrowding your shelves or containers, as this can lead to wrinkles. If necessary, use fabric softener sheets or lavender sachets to keep your linens smelling fresh and prevent wrinkles.

Q: Are there any specific linens that should be stored separately?

A: Yes, certain linens such as tablecloths or delicate fabrics may require special care. Consider storing them in acid-free tissue paper or garment bags to protect them from dust and damage.

Q: How can I make the most of a small linen closet?

A: Maximize vertical space by using stackable containers or adjustable shelves. Utilize the back of your closet door with over-the-door organizers or hooks. Consider using vacuum-sealed bags to compress bulky items and create more space.
