AN OVERVIEW OF MARIE KONDO AND THE KONMARI METHOD

Marie Kondo is a Japanese organizing consultant, author, and television show host renowned for developing the KonMari method, a revolutionary approach to decluttering and organizing.

With a philosophy deeply rooted in mindfulness and simplicity, Kondo encourages individuals to transform their living spaces by keeping only those items that “spark joy.”

The KonMari method follows a specific order of categories, such as clothes, books, papers, komono (miscellaneous items), and sentimental items, guiding people through a transformative process of evaluating and purging possessions.

Beyond mere tidying, Kondo’s method emphasizes cultivating a connection with belongings and fostering a living environment that aligns with personal values and brings a sense of harmony and joy.

Through her bestselling book, “The Life-Changing Magic of Tidying Up,” and the popular Netflix series, “Tidying Up with Marie Kondo,” she has inspired millions worldwide to declutter and embrace a more intentional and organized lifestyle.

WHAT IS THE KONMARI METHOD

The KonMari Method, developed by Marie Kondo, is a revolutionary approach to organization and decluttering that transcends traditional organizing methods.

Central to the KonMari philosophy is the idea of sparking joy – that belongings should bring a positive and joyful response.

The method organizes the decluttering process into specific categories, starting with clothes, followed by books, papers, komono (miscellaneous items), and concluding with sentimental items.

Kondo encourages individuals to hold each item in their hands and determine whether it truly brings joy, fostering a more mindful and intentional relationship with one’s possessions.

By following this systematic and emotional approach, the KonMari Method aims to create lasting transformations in both living spaces and individuals’ perspectives on their belongings.

ORGANIZING TECHNIQUES AND TIPS

Marie Kondo’s organizing techniques and tips are centered around the principles of simplicity, mindfulness, and joy. Here are some key strategies:

  1. Category-by-Category Approach: Tackle clutter by organizing items within specific categories (e.g., clothes, books, papers) rather than room by room. This ensures a comprehensive and focused decluttering process.
  2. “Sparking Joy”: Evaluate each item by holding it and determining whether it sparks joy. If an item doesn’t bring happiness, it’s recommended to express gratitude and let it go.
  3. Vertical Folding: Kondo advocates for a unique folding technique that allows clothes to stand vertically in drawers. This not only maximizes space but also makes it easier to see and access each item.
  4. Storage Solutions: Use storage solutions wisely, such as shoeboxes, bins, and dividers, to create designated spaces for each category. This helps maintain order and makes it easier to find and return items to their rightful places.
  5. Designated Spaces: Assign specific places for each item based on its category. This promotes a sense of order and ensures that belongings have a designated home.
  6. Decluttering Sentimental Items: When dealing with sentimental items, Kondo recommends keeping only those that truly bring joy and have a meaningful place in your life. This can involve creating a dedicated space for cherished mementos.
  7. Expressing Gratitude: Throughout the decluttering process, express gratitude for the items you choose to keep as well as those you decide to let go. This mindful approach adds a positive and appreciative dimension to the organization process.

By embracing these techniques, individuals can cultivate a living space that not only reflects their joy but also promotes a sense of calm and order in their everyday lives.

MY PERSONAL EXPERIENCE WITH THE MARIE KONDO METHOD

Introduced to Marie Kondo’s philosophy in November 2015, I decided to experiment with the shoebox method, starting with my handbag. Initially skeptical of the idea of daily handbag emptying as suggested by Kondo, it seemed impractical. The concept struck me as excessive, but I resolved to reserve judgment until I experienced it firsthand.

Opting for an empty shoebox, I initially placed it in the closet. Realizing its inconvenience, I relocated it to our kitchen cabinet, a more frequented spot. Emptying my handbag into the shoebox turned out to be surprisingly effortless, streamlining the process of finding items and encouraging a more intentional packing of essentials.

Emboldened by the success of my handbag, I extended this method to the baby bag, anticipating a potentially time-consuming process due to the multitude of items required for a baby. From diapers and wipes to clothes, bottles, and toys, the list seemed endless.

However, organizing the baby bag became remarkably straightforward, eliminating the need to fumble through pockets to locate necessities.

This approach also proved invaluable in preventing the inadvertent disposal of breast milk bottles. As anyone who has breastfed a baby knows, liquid gold is precious, and there’s nothing more frustrating than realizing you left it in the bag, only to watch it go down the drain.

WHAT MARIE KONDO METHODS FELL SHORT

While I initially embraced the excitement of implementing Marie Kondo’s Organization shoebox method, my enthusiasm dissipated over time. Emptying my handbag into a box daily started off promising but quickly became a tedious and annoying task.

Given that I don’t frequently change handbags and already maintain a fairly organized bag, the daily habit was unnecessary for my lifestyle. However, I can see the value for individuals who regularly switch between handbags, as the method facilitates an easy transition.

Another thing about the shoebox method was over time, their durability waned, and they quickly became prone to dirt, losing their original appeal.

In my years of organizing, a notable misstep has been using bins without careful consideration of their color or design. With shoeboxes, there are a variety of designs available which means they seldom match unless one consistently purchases the same style of shoe.  This results in a mismatched and cluttered appearance that contradicts the purpose of organizing.

Marie Kondo now offers a product line featuring matching boxes designed for organizational harmony. While I haven’t personally tried them, their cohesive aesthetics and calming, soft-toned colors suggest a promising solution.

FROM BLOGGING TO IN-HOME ORGANIZATION

This post was initially crafted during my blogging phase, reflecting my insights and experiences before venturing into the realm of home organization.

Since then, as a home organizer based in Charlotte, NC, we’ve successfully transformed numerous closets, especially those housing shoe collections.

Through practical application and firsthand experience, we’ve identified effective strategies that genuinely work, offering valuable insights for those seeking organized and decluttered living spaces.

My preferred choice for shoe organization, these stackable shoe bins offer functionality, visual appeal, and an affordable price point.

The primary objective of organization is easy access to what you need when you need it, and these bins do exactly that. Not only do they bring order and structure, but they also make it exceptionally easy to get a pair of shoes.

Above all, their space-saving design optimizes storage for ultimate success.
